In One Sentence What Is Land Of Hope And Glory About?

In this short documentary, hidden cameras and undercover filming reveal some of the brutal ways animals bred for the food industry are treated in the United Kingdom.

Brief Synopsis

In the Western world, and arguably the UK in particular, farming still conjures up images of animals roaming freely, feeding on lush green pastures as their young frolic and play. As has been shown with powerful documentaries like Dominion this idealistic view is, in the main, the stuff of fantasy. Land of Hope and Glory unmasks the grim realities of modern animal agriculture in the UK. It shows how all species bred for food are effectively treated in the same ways. Natural behaviours are suppressed; young are taken away from their parents prematurely, and substandard, almost torturous conditions lead to injury, disease and even cannibalism.

The Trailer

Why Is Land Of Hope And Glory A Vegan Documentary?

From a vegan perspective, Land of Hope and Glory brings into the question the moral issues surrounding the consumption of animal flesh for food and pleasure. Just because a practice such as beak trimming of chickens to prevent them injuring each other due to their cramped and stressful living conditions is still legal, it doesn’t make it right. Even if the majority of animals faced no mental or physical health problems due to their forced captivity, to have but a few suffer in order to derive foodstuffs that are simply not required, would still be morally questionable. As the narrator of the film points out, after watching the film (and others of a similar nature) nobody can now claim they didn’t know.

The UK is a so-called nation of ‘animal lovers’ but surely a nation of animals lovers would not subject pigs, cows, chickens and sheep to slaughter methods that leaves millions of animals each year to bleed to death or be boiled whilst still alive?  Surely a nation of animal lovers would not kill young animals that were growing too slowly to be profitable? Surely a nation of animal lovers would not imprison, kill and eat animals?
