In One Sentence What Is Forks Over Knives About?

Two leading researchers discover how western eating habits are linked to numerous modern diseases and how many can be prevented and reversed by consuming a whole foods, plant-based diet.

Brief synopsis

Forks Over Knives charts the rise of sugar and fat laden convenience foods which now feature heavily in the western diet. This has created an epidemic of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. In contrast, it is shown that in those countries and cultures where meat and dairy are consumed minimally or not at all, some of these diseases are virtually unheard of.

Eminent doctors, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, biochemist and co-author of the China Study and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a surgeon with over 150 scientific publications, describe how they were forced to change their beliefs with regards to diet in light of research they undertook and the jaw dropping conclusions they came to.

To demonstrate the power of plants, people with dietary related health problems are put on a vegan diet consisting of whole foods and their progress followed with some impressive results.

Why Is Forks Over Knives A Vegan Documentary?

Forks Over Knives (or ‘FOK’ as I don’t call it) is arguably one of the best vegan documentaries, focusing on the health benefits of ditching animal derived foods from one’s diet. Why? Well, without spoiling it, both Dr. Campbell’s and Dr. Esselstyn’s findings are truly remarkable, and will certainly make one think seriously about one’s food habits. Both are now in their mid-80s and are evidence themselves as to how consuming plants can preserve and protect one’s body.

One of the documentary’s key take-home messages is that much of what we think we know about food and nutrition is based on myth. This can, in the main, be attributed to industry. For example, the best sources of calcium, one would typically assume, comes from dairy products. Forks Over Knives provides evidence to the contrary and tackles other misconceptions (which are applicable to veganism) surrounding the recommended intake of protein.

Although visually, the physical changes undergone by people who follow the dietary advice given may not be as dramatic as in other vegan-themed documentaries, there are still real life examples of everyday people who, like you, may feel a little unsure about whether a plant-based diet is feasible and works. But based on the evidence in FOK, it does.
